Short Story
The Story Behind the Struggle
In the wake of the May 2025 Mokwa floods, Isah Mokwa used social media to spotlight the Niger State government’s neglect: delayed relief, empty promises, and families left to fend for themselves. In one post, he aptly dubbed Governor Bago “Governor Amunike”—a sharp critique of unfulfilled pledges. This exercise of constitutional rights under Section 39 of the Nigerian Constitution triggered his abduction by police from his Lapai home, orchestrated at the behest of Mokwa Local Government Chairman Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, who views Isah as a political threat ahead of the November 1 local elections.
Amnesty International has condemned the arrest as “an attack on freedom of expression,” while human rights group Hope Behind Bars Africa demands the charges be dropped, citing misuse of the Cybercrimes Act to stifle dissent. Isah’s lawyer, Ibrahim Usman Wali, decries the bureaucratic delays as tactics to prolong suffering. As of today, Isah remains behind bars for speaking truth to power— but his spirit endures, and so must our fight.
Fuel the Fight for Justice
To cover Isah’s mounting legal fees (including court appearances, appeals, and expert consultations), family support during this ordeal, and logistics for protests and awareness efforts, we’re launching a targeted fundraising drive with a realistic goal of ₦5,000,000 (five million Naira). This breaks down as:
₦3,000,000 for legal defense and bail processes (e.g., hiring additional counsel if needed).
₦1,000,000 for Isah’s family sustenance and travel to court hearings.
₦1,000,000 for campaign amplification (printing materials, digital ads, and event coordination).
Every kobo counts—small donations from many hands can overwhelm injustice.

Campaign Story
#FreeIsahMokwa is a urgent solidarity campaign launched today, November 4, 2025, to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Abubakar Isah Mokwa, a 400-level postgraduate student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, in Niger State, Nigeria. Arrested on October 24, 2025, for daring to criticize Governor Umaru Bago’s inadequate response to devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area, Isah now faces trumped-up charges of terrorism, cybercrime, thuggery, cyberbullying, and defamation under the Cybercrimes Act 2024. Remanded in Minna Correctional Centre until November 17, 2025, his detention is a blatant attack on free speech and a chilling reminder of rising authoritarianism in Nigeria.
This campaign unites students, human rights advocates, civil society, and concerned citizens to amplify Isah’s voice—known among peers as “Senator” for his fearless advocacy—and hold power accountable. No one should be jailed for calling out government failure, especially when lives are at stake from floods that have displaced families and destroyed livelihoods in Mokwa.
Campaign Goals
Immediate Release: Secure Isah Mokwa’s unconditional freedom before his remand expires on November 17, 2025.
Drop All Charges: Expose and dismantle the weaponization of cybercrime laws against activists.
Protect Free Speech: Push for reforms to safeguard Nigerians’ right to criticize leaders without fear.
Support Flood Victims: Rally resources for Mokwa communities still reeling from the disaster.
